About Me & Services
ABOUT ME
Hello, and welcome!
I'm DeAnne—a brain-body wellness coach, certified practitioner in advanced sound and vibrational therapies, and a Brainspotting Practitioner on the path to full certification. My journey into healing is enriched by a PhD in Communication where I researched the impact of self-narratives on emotions in mental health and well being. I am also completing a clinical rehabilitation and mental health counseling program at UNC (Licensure forthcoming for the State of North Carolina in mid-2025).
By blending these passions and expertise, I've crafted a holistic approach designed to support your brain-body wellness. My self-care and sound spa sessions are a way for me share my passion for coaching with brainspotting techniques, energy wellness, and sound frequencies as meditative modalities that balance mind and body. All are integrated to provide a supportive space for focused mindfulness and somatic healing. I am honored to be able to hold space for your reflection, growth, and clarity. Please don't hesitate to contact me should you have questions.

What is Brainspotting?

In the evolving world of therapeutic techniques, Brainspotting stands out as a powerful approach for addressing trauma, emotional pain, and even physical discomfort. Developed by Dr. David Grand in 2003, Brainspotting (BSP) is a neuroexperiential informed therapeutic practice that focuses on locating and processing unresolved experiences stored in the brain and body.
But what exactly is Brainspotting, and how does it affect those who experience it? Let’s dive deeper.

The technique hinges on the idea that where you look affects how you feel. By guiding the client’s eye movements to specific “brainspots,” practitioners can help uncover and release experiences stored in the subcortical brain—home to emotions, memories, and the autonomic nervous system. Unlike other modalities, which may engage the cognitive brain, Brainspotting bypasses the more analytical parts of the mind. This allows individuals to process experiences on a deeper, more intuitive level, often uncovering emotions or memories that words alone cannot access.

How does a brainspotting session work?

During a Brainspotting session, the therapist uses a pointer or their own hand to direct the client’s gaze to a particular spot in their visual field. These “brainspots” are identified through subtle cues such as changes in eye movement, facial expression, or physical sensations in the body.
Once a brainspot is located, the therapist helps the client stay with the experience, allowing the brain and body to naturally process the emotions or memories tied to that spot. This process taps into the brain’s innate ability to heal itself, facilitated by the dual attunement of the practitioner and client.
Many practitioners, such as myself, also incorporate bilateral auditory stimulation, such as tones or music played alternately in each ear, to enhance the therapeutic effect. This component helps regulate the nervous system and maintain a state of focused awareness during the session. Note: I only incorporate biolateral sounds for in-person sessions.

What are sound baths?
In a world filled with noise and distraction, a sound bath offers a rare opportunity to pause, listen, and reconnect with yourself. From my viewpoint, sound specifically occupies a special place between the scientific and the spiritual. It at once can lead us to the physiological brainwave entrainment that supports mindfulness and meditation. Likewise, it can stir the emotions and experiences that are held somatically within our body. Sound has been used for many healing purposes across diverse cultures throughout history. Sound baths, a modality where participants are immersed in sound frequencies produced by various instruments such as singing bowls, gongs, and tuning forks, represent a contemporary iteration of this ancient practice. While the benefits are numerous, empirical evidence examining the physiological and psychological effects of sound baths is growing. We now know of sound's positive effects on mood, tension, anxiety, stress, and well-being.

The science behind sound baths:
On a physiological level, sound baths induce a state of deep relaxation, similar to the effects of meditation or mindfulness practices. Unlike meditation and mindfulness though, a person can enjoy a sound bath by simply relaxing in their space without any further instruction. Neuroimaging studies have shown that exposure to specific sound frequencies can modulate brain activity, leading to increased theta and alpha wave production associated with relaxation and heightened states of consciousness. Moreover, sound baths have been linked to the activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting rest-and-digest responses and reducing physiological markers of stress such as cortisol levels and heart rate variability.

In addition to their physiological effects, sound baths exert profound psychological influences. The rhythmic patterns and harmonics produced during a session can lead to brainwave entrainment, facilitating shifts in cognitive states and emotional experiencing. Overall, research shows that sound baths can enhance mood, reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, and promote feelings of connectedness and inner peace. Further, the immersive nature of sound baths fosters mindfulness and present-moment awareness, offering a respite from the incessant mental chatter of daily life.
